Plas Newydd House and Garden
Not far from the bustling A55 is Plas Newydd House and Gardens, though you would never know it once here.
We are a little biased, we love Plas Newydd for so many things but our favourite is the Red Squirrels. Elusive and shy under most circumstances, the staff have feeding stations around the grounds to tempt them out. Infact the first feeding station is as you enter the grounds so the Red Squirrels are used to people being around to some degree.
Any how, we are digressing from the whole point of this page which is about the fabulous house and gardens. The origins of the house or at least the original abode on this location date back to 1470. It was progressively modernised through the years and eventually became the seat of the Marquess of Anglesey which is a title peerage. Plas Newydd is now owned and run by the national trust with the transfer of ownership taking place in 1976.
Under the national trust ownership restoration has taken place and the grounds are well looked after. Plas Newydd was the first property in the UK to have a marine source heat pump installed to reduce the heating costs associated with the large and stately house. This should give a good idea of where it is located, the banks of the stunning Menai. The house and gardens have some of the best views of the mountains of Snowdonia in Anglesey.
Plas Newydd House is a museum piece as a building and also contains one too. There are pieces within going back several hundred years but its not the only attraction inside. The painting and a huge mural cover a huge was, its a very impressive site to behold.
Out side the gardens are large and immaculate as expected from a key National trust site. Rhododendrons line the paths an give a lot of colour to your explore of the gardens and terrace. There is also a wood walk with bird / squirrel hide with feeding station to watch the local wildlife. In fact the gardens here are quite large, take care not to miss the amazing tree house. if you have children with you then they will definitely want to explore the tree top hideaway.
After you have done with the house and gardens there is a like cafĂ© selling the usual refreshment to the rear of the house. We would take the offering back round to the front on a sunny day and watch the boats passing on the Menai. Alternatively there are a few secluded spots hidden away with views of the Menai and Snowdonia mountains. You can easily spend a few hours on the grounds if you take your time. Don’t forget to keep an eye out for the Red Squirrels!
