The Dingle Nature Reserve
The Dingle nature reserve or Nant-y-Pandy is one of our favourite walks in North Wales.
What can we say, there is just something special about the place. It is a haven for wildlife and one of the best places to see the small but elegant and rare Red Squirrels. Not just on Anglesey or North Wales but in the whole of the UK. I don’t want to jinx anyone but there is not once we have been and failed to see one and yes, we have visited several times.
The Dingle is well looked after and maintained. Raised wooden walkways meander through the woods and at times close to the river. One section is above the river on a cliff side! The noise from the local birds especially in spring it amazing to listen too. You are walking through a 25 acre wooded valley filled with wildlife, we literally stood and watched countless fish jumping clear out of the water. Now that’s not something you will see on a regular basis, is it?
What make the Dingle so special is it has a little bit of everything you want from a nature reserve. It truly is a beautiful place to visit, with it overgrown rail track running along the centre. The plants almost flow over the sides as the tracks cross the river with its mini waterfalls. The pathway starts (or finishes) almost in the centre of Langefni and takes you up to the Cefni Dam. The lake and Dam are also great places to see and visit and ticks another box for us.
If you are in the area and want a great walk full of wildlife and a high chance of seeing Red Squirrels then you must pay the Dingle a visit. Its is home to a wide range of species including Adders and Lizards (we have seen the Lizards too!)
Nant-y-Pandy truly is a small but awesome place to visit and in our opinion one of North Wales true hidden gems.
