Pontcysyllte Aqueduct
Pontcysyllte Aqueduct is certainly a mouthful but also and more importantly a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
This amazing work of architecture was built in 1805 as a crossing over the River Dee. 10 years were taken to design, plan and built this huge Aquaduct. It’s amazing to know as you walk across that it was built over 200 years ago. Strong and sturdy the aquaduct is held aloft by 18 archs made of stone and cast iron.
If you like heights then you will love the walk across the narrow pathway. At its maximum height you are a colossal 38 metres high. The walkway protected by a chest high railing, the canal side is very different. The views are both far, wide and high. In the distance you can see Traphont Cefn Mawr Viaduct too which is a similar building but not as high.
Along the side of the canal you can book a ticket for a canal boat ride across the aquaduct. Moreover for the more adventurous canal boats can be hired for the day or longer. Just be mindful there is no rail on the boat side, just awesome views and a large drop! The entire area is full of the history of the area during the industrial revolution with plenty of reminders dotted around.
Either side of the bridge there are toilets close by. Moreover cafes and ice cream for sale! If you fancy something a little stronger then there is that too. Walk or ride its up to you but it is well worth the trip, it really is a marvel to see.
Parking is plentiful and is just a few pounds for 4 hours, it’s only a couple of minutes walk away from the Pontcysyllte Aquaduct.
