Beaumaris Castle

Beaumaris Castle is the castle in the busy tourist town of…you guessed it, Beaumaris.

One of the thing Beaumaris castle is almost famous for is the fact that it was never actually finished. Though by looking at it you would never know other than the entire building appears lower than other castles. Beaumaris Castle was the last of the Iron Ring of castles to be constructed by Edward I in Wales. Its design is superb and was almost perfect symmetry which was far different from any other castles built.

This fantastic castle in its idyllic setting now takes its place as a world heritage site. Beaumaris is translated to “fair marsh” which gives a clear indication of what the area looked like at the time. Built in 1295-1330 the castle features a moat and was once connected to the sea. Looking now you would never now but the entrance by the main road was a dock going back almost a millennia.

Beaumaris Castle is one of the great castles left that is in quite good condition. You are able to walk a large section of the outer walls and many internal passageways. Several rooms are in good condition and give a sense of scale when wondering around. We actually came across a bat hanging upside down in an internal corridor!

Now Beaumaris is one of the key attractions in both Beaumaris and North Wales too. It is a bustling tourist villages with a busy pier and a number of other attractions to help bring in the summer crowds.

A little further up the road towards Penmon is a little know Motte and Bailey fortress known as Castell Aberlleiniog. Its a great little walk through the woods and another castle to check out in the area.

To find Beaumaris Castle follow this address – Castle St, Beaumaris, LL58 8AP. You simply cannot miss it as it resides on the main road through the town. There are also public toilets on the same street. Parking is ample near by on the green, it is pay and display and by card only.

Beaumaris is a UNESCO world heritage site. Technically it appears as the most perfect castle built in North Wales. When looking down on the castle from the sky you are able to see its perfect symmetry. Although from the ground you simply cannot see this, you do get a far closer look at its perfections. It really is in great condition and gives comanding views over the area even though it was never fully completed. Had it been the internal towers and walls would have been much higher than they are today.
