Powis Castle and Gardens
Powis Castle and Gardens is a must for anyone visiting the area. Its is owned and managed by the National Trust and is kept in impeccable condition.
We have seen a few castles in our time but none as ornately decorated and restored as Powis Castle. The murals and artwork around the castle are just something else. Moreover some cover entire rooms covering several floors in a normal sized home. For this alone is is worth going out of your way to see, especially the cherubs. There are probably other castles in the UK with similar decor but none that we have seen so far!
The National Trust has a rule in place at some locations and Powis Castle is covered by this rule – no photography. Its a shame as we are unable show you just how amazing the decor is. However that means it will be more amazing when you get to see it first hand! Decor aside it is a fantastic place to visit complete with secret stair cases hidden among book shelves – awesome. There is just something about Powis Castle that makes it stand out above many others we have visited.
Its not just the decor that stands out in Powis Castle its the layout and furniture too. It has a real sense of charm allowing you a window in to the past. Several of the bedrooms are incredible, every inch a work of art from days gone by. As you walk through the house and explore its many rooms you can see the different ages. The contrast between the old and the not so old, old if that makes sense, but history in all its glory.
As you walk through the well kept and pristine gardens you may chance upon the odd Peacock or two. Check out the old brick chiller overlooking the pond, it looks like a mini igloo. Powis Castle sits much higher than the gardens so there are steps and inclines involved but well worth the walk if you are able. There is also an orchard to check out at the bottom end of the gardens.
After checking out the Castle and gardens you can always pop in to the on site café for well deserved refreshments.
Its definitely one of the best, if not the best interiors of any castle we have seen and the gardens a great too.
