Llanddwyn Island
There is a good reason that Llanddwyn Island is a popular place to visit in North Wales that’s for sure.
Taking in the pictures below should set the scene for why people come back time and time again. In our humble opinion Llanddwyn Island is home to some of the most stunning views in the UK. This amazing volcanic Island is the stuff of dreams and at times wild horses too!
When is an island not an island? Well at only the higher high tides does it become an island and totally separated from the main island of Anglesey. The rest of the time you can simply walk across the sand and onto Ynys Llanddwyn.
Which ever route you take to the Island it has something a little bit different and special. Along the stunning Llanddwyn Beach or as its commonly referred to name of Newborough Beach. Views via this route are of the mountain ranges of Snowdonia and the Llyn Peninsula. Head towards Llanddwyn via Newborough Forests often quiet pathways and you may see a Red Squirrel or two. Its one of the best places in Wales to see these rare and elusive creatures.
Llanddwyn Island has several paths for you to follow, one is a circular path around the Island. This lets you see all the little coves and awesome sandy beach’s surrounded by pristine blue seas. The main path down the centre of the island takes you to the old pilot houses, one of which is a museum piece. From here you can check out the end sections including the old lighthouse.
The view from the top of this perch are simply stunning and you can see for miles around in every direction. If you are lucky you may well see Seals or even Porpoise who frequent the area around the island. Though you are not allowed access to the old lighthouse the, walk around still gives commanding views.
Before arriving at the Pilot houses you will come across the remain of an old chapel. The ruins of St Dwynwen’s Church are in a central location on the island and impossible to miss, it all adds to the islands charm. During the Middle Ages the church was associated with St Dwynwen, the patron saint of lovers. Never mind the middle ages it still is to the day, there are several informational boards to read around the ruins.
Llanndwyn Island is one of those locations that keeps you coming back for more. Outside of summer, never let the weather put you off, dress for it and you will be fine. There is nothing more amazing than having the entire island all to yourself.
