Penrhyn Castle

Penrhyn Castle is one of the finer castles in North Wales and is just a few miles from Bangor. By finer I mean its level of conservation is outstanding with the entire place intact.

Penrhyn Castle is owned and operated by the national trust so is well looked after. It is definitely one of the jewels in North Wales crown. Its quick and easy to find just off the A55 North Wales coast road. Before entering the castle ground you go through quite impressive gate house and make your way up the wooded road. The river runs along this road just down the ravine and is worth a look if you are able to.

After passing through the entrance there is an uphill walk to the castle or if you ask a small electric car to take you the whole way if needed. The walk is nice enough and both wooded and grassland. There is a great spot that allows you to look out over the Menai toward Puffin Island too. Great for photos.

When visiting the castle you can access a large amount of the ground and a smaller section of the upper floor. Every room is exquisite and like a museum which I suppose it is. Several of the fireplaces really stand out as you enter the rooms as well as the timely décor. The rooms are quite grand with thick wooden panelling and large as expected. The main entrance hall is very impressive with is stained glass windows and star signs.

Penrhyn Castle also has a couple of other treats for you. Even though the castle is a grand spectacle the gardens are also worth checking out on your visit. They house several ponds with various creatures in, we saw Newts on our visit. Moreover during summer the flowers are a spectacular sight, especially the long arch you are able to walk through. Just bear in mind the castle gardens are down a relatively steep path. There are numerous paths to take you around the woodland walks too.

If you love trains there is also a small train museum based on site. Despite its small size it has a lots of living history to look at as well as impressive steam engines. After taking everything in there is a café on site for refreshments and multiple picnic tables on the well manicured lawns.

In all its one to add to the bucket list if visiting North Wales.
