Pistyll Rhaeadr

Pistyll Rhaeadr waterfall is an amazing and huge waterfall in mid Wales, close to the border with England.

I have added it to seenorthwales as it is only just out of the area and well worth visiting. The falls are by far the biggest in Wales in terms of sheer drop which is around 73 metres. Technically there are three drops one of which is around 40 metres. The falls come from the Afon Disgynfa which turns in the the Afon Rhaeadr at the bottom of the falls. All flowing down from the foothills of the Berwyn Mountain range.

If you do visit the falls and I really suggest you make the journey to this amazing place. Do not miss out on the walk around to the top of the falls with its stunning views of the valley below. There are a few small “falls” around the the top before the main drop which are also completely stunning. There are two paths to the top, one longer and less steep and the other a challenge with loose footings in places.

Just be careful with dogs and children if you do visit the top of Pistyll Rhaeadr as it is totally open. No rails or guards near the edge and a vertical drop the height of the falls. The area at the top of the falls is totally unspoilt.

At the base of the falls there are some toilets that are coin operated with entrance via full length turnstiles so take some change. There is a quaint looking B&B with a small cafe too which comes in handy. To the rear of the cafe is a camping field, info can be found HERE. The link also covers the up to date parking costs for the site. There are not many places in the paid car park and a few off road areas quite close to the falls. I will stress parking is very limited at the site as is the several mile long road to the falls with limited passing places.

Tips –

  • Go early or late as the road is several miles long with only one way in or out and has limited passing places
  • The paths to the top of the falls are not smooth and have heavy inclines in places
  • There are public toilets in the village of Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant, again limited parking
