Portmeirion

Portmeirion is often referred to as an Italian village on the Welsh Riviera, and that’s because it is!

A little of its history, the village was built by Sir Clough Williams-Ellis taking from 1925 and 1975. Due to villages unique styling it has been the location for several tv shows. The most notable of these was the 60’s TV show “The Prisoner”, often used as PortMeirion’s claim to fame. These days its more widely known as one of North Wales premier tourist attractions with visitors from all over the world. Not bad for a small seaside village.

The villages vibrant but almost pastel colour scheme make it a site to behold. It is simply stunning with every new building catching your eye. There is simply so much to look at as you walk around, it has so much wow factor. So much so its clearly visible far away across the estuary. If you fancy some food in a mildly exotic place then there are several places to eat in the village. This stunning setting also double as a hotel with some of the houses being available to stay in. A couple down the estuary end of the village would be our choice due to the panoramic sea views. I would definitely watch the video below if you are thinking of visiting as it will help make the decision for you!

Portmeirion is more than just a picturesque Italian style village, it has quite large gardens too. Its great to wonder round and if you work your way around the edge you can take in the beach too. A couple of caves dot the rear of the beach, on clear days you can see for miles too. If you do go on the beach there are rockpools to explore with crabs, fish and Prawns, especially in summer.

My number one tip and if you can try and follow it you will have a far nicer experience. I know we cant always plan on the good old British weather, especially on the western coast of Wales. If you can, try and visit on a sunny day. So much more is added to your experience as the colours become far more vibrant and makes Portmeirion extra special. Moreover if you can find the section in the grounds that overlooks the village, its perfect for getting a few pics as mementos. No matter how many pictures you look at this is one location you have to see with your own eyes.

Another of North Wales hidden gems, Portmeirion is close to Porthmadog and there is plenty to do in the area.
